An example of more modern art is “I Can’t Help Myself,” which Sun Yuan and Peng Yu created in 2016. It exhibits behind glass walls in the Guggenheim Museum. The art depicts a robot that once constantly scooped up wine-red cellulose liquid. At the start, the machine picks up the liquid happily, possibly even dancing with one of the 32 programmed movements in between scoops. It efficiently does its work while entertaining the audience. However, because the robot continued to work without taking a break, as time moved on, it started to malfunction. Then, in 2019, the machine died, bringing strong urges of emotion to viewers’ hearts.
The robot was trying to pick up something continuously leaking out of itself, representing people tirelessly trying to fix a problem that can’t ever be resolved, tragically leading to their limit and end. To explain, because the robot always scooped up the red liquid, at first glance, it seemed as if it was collecting the cellulose to keep running. But later, it came to light that, the whole time, the robot ran on electricity and that it died from overuse. This means the robot didn’t need cellulose liquid to survive but kept scooping it up.
There are many theories on what the artwork “I Can’t Help Myself” means, and they are all right. However, here is mine: When one focuses too much on the little details compared to the big picture, it leads to ultimate despair. A lighthearted example of this would be working on a project. When one pays too much attention to the font and letter size instead of the actual content, they waste their time on something that could be done without. And, when due, the participant that only worked on the design won’t perform as well as someone who produced solid results, even if it isn’t as aesthetically pleasing. The person who tried to perfect the project’s beauty is similar to the robot who perpetually picked up the fluid when it didn’t even need it.
